GAIT ANALYSIS / CONSULTATION

Walking is a basic part of our daily functioning and wellness but many people walk using poor mechanics without realizing. We don’t realize what a joy pain-free walking until we have difficulty walking.

Walking is a basic extremely important aspect of our daily functioning. Walking without pain is a critical component of wellness.

We may have been walking since we were just one year-old, but we've never actually learned how to walk properly. Walking is a reflex movement - we never pay conscious attention to how we walk until one day when we encounter difficulty walking, and we then realize how important it is.

The way we walk has a large impact on our body, especially the musculoskeletal system. Gait analysis is a special method for investigating how one stands and walks.

Since most foot, ankle, knee, leg, and back pain begins or worsens while we're standing and walking, a gait analysis provides the most effective way to diagnose these problems.

Since most foot, ankle, knee, leg, and back pain begins or worsens while we're standing and walking, a gait analysis provides the most effective way to diagnose the cause of these problems. But the human gait is difficult to analyze by observation alone. The patterns of the stride movement are very complex, with many hidden factors playing a role behind the scenes.
In addition, each stride takes just 0.6 to 0.8 seconds. The movement is so fast that the human eye has difficulty catching all the component details
of such action.

A comprehensive gait analysis involves using computerized plantar pressure measurement systems that allow our experts to evaluate and analyze the forces exerted by different parts of your feet as you stand and walk. We complement this with analyzing slow motion action sequence images recorded from different angles simultaneously using digital video motion capture equipment.

This in-depth analysis provides a detailed picture of all of the contributing factors, and let us detect deviations within the gait pattern and identify any abnormality. After the assessment, a gait adjustment plan is given. This often includes a shoe prescription and/or providing custom-made foot orthoses.

A comprehensive gait analysis consists of:
  • Detailed functional evaluation of alignment, range of joint movement, muscle flexibility, and muscle strength
  • Video gait capture from different angles
  • Computerized foot pressure measurements, including pressure distribution and timing
  • Integration and interpretation of the findings
  • Expert review of the results and then recommendations
