Good shoes play an important role in the maintenance of our wellness, since we spend so much time bearing weight on them over our life time. The most important criteria for selecting a pair of properly fitting shoes are: : functional fit and dimensional fit. Functional fit means that the shoe is appropriate for your foot type and can properly support and complement the foot's motion. The dimensional fit is what people are more familiar with: the shoe's length, width, depth, and general shape needs to be suitable for your foot size.
However, for most of people, finding shoes that fit properly can be a frustrating process.
Surveys reveal that at least one in every six persons has some problem with their feet, mostly result from improperly fitting shoes. Shoes that are too tight, too loose, or don't provide appropriate support can lead to abnormal stress on the feet, ankle, lower leg, knee, hip, and spine. This ongoing loading can cause pain and injuries that may limit or prevent their participation in daily activities. Review of the literature reveals that improperly fitting shoes are often associated with complications of foot problems and ulcerations, particularly among women, and elderly and diabetic patient populations. Poorly fitting shoes can cause or aggravate bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, and other disabling foot disorders. And properly fitting footwear is even more critical for many people with more serious conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and peripheral vascular disease, and following severe trauma affecting their movement.
